Description

Product Description

The word “vocation” may conjure up images of clergy in black suits, bishops in pointed hats, and monks in long robes. But they’re not the only ones with vocations―or calls―from God. Lay people, too, are called to serve God, and in this book, Edward S. Little invites us to recognize – and respond – to our own unique vocations.

Ears to Hear takes readers on a journey through the Old Testament, showing the way God called ordinary people to service, and drawing parallels for ordinary people in the twenty-first century. The story of Abraham, who was called away from his homeland with no clear destination, exemplifies the insecurity of modern-day readers who may be called to abandon the security of their homes or their jobs to do God’s will. The story of Moses, who was armed with a list of serious―and logical―objections to God’s call, is a lesson for contemporary readers faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles to their vocations. In each of these stories, Little shows that God’s call―in Old Testament days and now―is always accompanied with more than enough grace to answer it.

Each chapter concludes with a set of discussion questions, making this an ideal book not only for individuals discerning God’s call, but also for parish study groups.

Review

"Bishop Little''s portraits of the call of God upon the lives of some of the greats of Scripture is poignant, perceptive, and to the point. They are a lesson to us in reading, marking, learning, and inwardly digesting the Scriptures, then faithfully interpreting them so they speak to each of us in today''s rush and tumble world."--Richard Kew, 3/17/03"Bishop Little is doing something wonderful for the church--he is reclaiming the title of teaching bishop. Using personal examples, real people, and up-to-the-minute references, this exceptionally gifted stroyteller shows us how vital and dynamic the Bible continues to be. There is nothing canned, phony or dull on any page of this lively volume. Well-written, imaginative and easy to read, Ed Little''s work will be a delight for both individuals and study groups."--Fleming Rutledge, Author of The Bible and the New York Times and the Battle for Middle-earth"There is much wisdom to think about in Ears to Hear" -Episcopal Life"..offers good teaching, gentle wisdom, and vibrant invitation." - Byron Borger in Coalition for Christian Outreach Newsletter"What does the world "vocation" mean to you? To many, it means a call to serve God in the Church, as a minister or priest. Clergy aren''t the only ones with vocations - or calls - from God. Lay people, too, are called to God''s service, and in this book Bishop Little invites all of us to recognize and respond to our own unique calls."--Anglican Book Centre, Spring 2004

As a person currently in Discernment for Holy Orders in the Episcopal Church, I was given this book by my priest as my first reading assignment. To say that was excellent would be an inderstatement!

This book''s chapters each use a different Biblical character to explore various kinds of circumstances in which one might be called by God to some ministry or work. Each ends with a series of 3-5 in-depth discussion questions, each designed to make the reader explore their own calling in light of what has just been read.

Though this book was written by an Episcopal bishop, it is useful for any Christian denomination. It is also good for individual use, or (more ideally) for perusal with one''s priest, pastor, or other spiritual advisor. Im not sure if anyone could write a better book on this topic; I''d give it 10 stars if I could!

Ears to Hear powerfully illuminates Scripture to highlight the many different ways God calls EACH of us to ministry. The questions for reflection at the end of each chapter led me to better understand myself and to recognize opportunities to serve God. I am sure this is an excellent study tool for someone contemplating a strong call to ordination. But I also believe it is a valuable tool for congregations of any Christian denomination to use to help people explore their own gifts and ministries. Thank you, Bishop Ed Little, for using your extraordinary story telling ability to craft such a helpful book for God''s people.

Of the several books on discernment I''ve read, Ears to Hear is far and away the best. It is thoroughly founded in the Scriptures, using the calls of different biblical figures to explore how God communicates with us and how we sometimes run away from that call. Each chapter addresses one biblical call, a similar modern-day call Bishop Little has had personal experience of, an explication of the main take-away points from these examples, and some thought-provoking questions. The biblical examples and his concrete lessons drawn from them were very helpful to me in dealing with my doubts and fears, and really helped me to see the ways God can work.

Bishop Little uses a combination of personal events from his own life, people he has had contact with and most interesting the story of various people called by God for various missions from the Old Testament. This book is for all earing or feeling a calling, whether it is to the lay or ordained ministry. He points out that God has patience, He will present the offer more than once and will accept "no", from us. Regardless of our response God will still love us. The call never comes at the right moment or under the best circumstance. Pray, get some guidance and jump in with eyes open.

We are using this book as the basis of study for our church based small group. It is well written and easy to read and understand. The questions make for interesting and informative discussions. I recommend it for those seeking guidance in their spiritual walk to help in discerning God''s call to service. Though we have used it for our small group study, it would also be suited for individual study as well.

A great book with thought provoking questions at the end of each chapter. Bishop Little did a good job of weaving his personal experiences with related Biblical stories.
